StavrosYou must checkout this stunning campaign by Nokia, called "Position Art". Oh my word, Max and I watched and laughed for minutes! Best of all, there's no Nokia branding on the site - it just so happens that the character, Stavros uses the N82 phone to create his art.

It asks people to participate in helping Stavros, a wacky egomaniac artist, to creae art in beautiful cities around the world, using GPS tracking and the landscape as your canvas.

Brilliant! It says exactly what it needs to, positions the phone as a powerful navigational device, and doesn't make me wary of being tricked or lied to with the usual big logos and condescending copywriting. I want an N82 now!

Thanks to Uwe for the heads up.

Update: Lol! Forgot to share the link... HERE!

Business Acumen for ArtistsThe art world is fascinating to me. It is filled with passionate, educated and talented people, most of who make hardly any money from it! Quite obviously there is a need for business education in this community.

So UCT Business School is running a 13 week programme to "assist artists in developing the business acumen needed to step into their rightful commercial space - without compromising their artistic integrity". Wow.

Interestingly, alot of the "soft-skills" necessary in producing excellent art, are increasingly desirable in business today. Creativity, intuition, collaboration, remix, commentary, cultural sensitivity... The same type of values we see in new-marketing.

It's being offered at a highly subsidized rate of R2500 for the entire 13week process - the money goes to the Obz Community Centre.

It's going to be highly practical. I'm honoured to be involved. Please help spread the word.

Art with a HeartAnother cool initiative by Platypus Productions:
Art with Heart provides those ‘frustrated’ artists working in the advertising, marketing and production industries with the opportunity to create personal artwork in various media and have these exhibited at an annual exhibition where clients and colleagues can discover their other creative sides. All the works will be for sale and the proceeds will be donated to charity.

You can submit Photography, Sculpture, Painting, Knitting, or whatever. And some of the top people in the industry have already signed up to submit. I expect Kirby and Max will be making excellent submissions too:)

Jill and Stanley from Platypus have asked me to put out a request for someone to create and manage a blog for this project. I think it's gonna be quite a good networking opportunity, possibly for a student looking to get involved in Marketing or Advertising. It will run until November. Please mail me if you're interested.

Brand You
Tom Peters, one of my favourite business gurus, wrote an important article: "The Brand Called You".

It was written in 1997, and has spawned a whole micro-industry of "Brand You Consultants". It is one of the most important articles you could possibly read if you agree with me that we're working and playing in an "Attention Economy".
Basically, "The Brand Called You" article says that if we want to get ahead then we should apply Marketing and promotion to ourselves in the same way that Nike or Coca Cola does with their products.

This is the reason that I have a personal website/blog: Its one of the ways that I'm building my personal brand. It's not easy though, I gotta tell you. Great brands evolve and develop - and they usually take time... I've been writing on this blog for about three months now, and I'm much happier with my writing but I still don't think that I've found a voice that resonates with who I really am, and with what you (precious Reader) love to read about regularly.... But I'm getting there:-) (i.e. audience is growing by the week!)
One of the best reasons for having my own blog is that I can "put my best foot forward" when potential clients, employers, business partners, and even old friends search for me online.
(Previous to doing this blog, I think the top hit for my name on Yahoo was this article about a deal that went sour a couple of years ago - c'mon, that's not cool!)

Checkout the "Useful Tools" page on this site for free blogging sites. You don't need any technical knowledge to do it, and it can reap great returns.

Art of the week
Grace - Max Kaizen

Title: Grace
Artist: Max Kaizen
Price: R8 000
Comment: This is one of those pieces that needs to be seen "in real life" to be fully appreciated... Firstly, it's large. Then, it is multilayered and intricately textured with an arabesque script and delicate gold leaf beneath the landscape. It has a magical, soulful quality that transfixes me. In a word, it's "Grace".

Contact me if you'd like more info on this painting.

Have a great week 20 2006!
